Bicycle FAQs

When talking in mountain bike terms, what does the word travel mean?

Travel is how much movement is allowed by the suspension. The more travel the suspension gives, the better the shock absorbing value of the suspension. More is good, in terms of being able to control your bike on an uneven trail. However a lot of travel, especially in the rear of the bike takes energy from your pedaling. For this reason many avid mountain bikers will utilize a downhill bike with a large amount of travel, and an uphill bike without a rear suspension and a lowered front suspension.

What was so safe about the safety bike?

The safety bike was one of the world’s first marketing successes. It was the successor to the high-wheel bicycle, which was a very dangerous bike. In a world before helmets, the high-wheel bicycle placed riders 6 feet or more off the ground, and directly over the steering portion of their vehicle. This resulted in very nasty accidents, and let the bicycle to be seen as something of a daredevil’s item. The safety bicycle was named and designed to prevent those nasty, sometimes fatal crashes. It removed the propulsion from the steering portion of the vehicle, and lowered the rider to about the height they would be while seated. This, coupled with the name, led to the widespread acceptance of the bicycle by people other than thrill seekers.

Are electric bicycles practical?

In a word: Yes. Just ask the millions of Chinese people who use them. In China the electric bike is a more often used form of transportation than the automobile. A small motor assisting the bike makes it quite an efficient way of getting around, and if it’s run on electricity, you simply have to plug it in at night to charge. Alternatively a small gasoline motor can be attached, and compared to even a motorcycle, it sips gasoline.
